“I think there is some misunderstanding here. First, Switzerland did not join or sign any communiques after the meeting that China and Brazil held last week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Second, we were at the meeting , but as observers And the third important point: Switzerland has not changed its position, says Baumann.
According to him, Switzerland’s position “remains absolutely clear: any decision in response to Russia’s full-scale military aggression against Ukraine must fully respect international law, the UN Charter and, in particular, Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.”
However, the ambassador added that Switzerland believes that any peace plan that “respects the mentioned fundamental principles” should be considered.
“And this is exactly what we saw in the final communique of the first global peace summit in Ukraine, which took place in Switzerland in June. This summit was built on preliminary discussions based on the Ukrainian peace formula and other peace proposals consistent with international law and the UN Charter ,” Baumann noted.
He explained that it was in accordance with this position that the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to participate as an observer in the meeting initiated by the Chinese and Brazilian sides.
Moreover, according to the diplomat, this decision was taken because Switzerland believes that “it is important to talk about peace when there is a war, which causes enormous suffering and losses.”
“And this is the same thing we did in June in Bürgenstock, when we gathered a wide range of countries to discuss the prospects for the peace process, but Switzerland has not changed and nothing should be decided on Ukraine.” added the ambassador.
