Šefčović stressed the importance of quickly reaching an agreement on the proposal to allocate macro-financial assistance to Ukraine of up to EUR 35 billion.
“It is necessary that funds be allocated before the end of this year to give Ukraine the necessary fiscal space,” he said, recalling the promise of the G7 in June.
The vice president of the European Commission also noted efforts to prepare Ukraine for the coming winter.
“Together with our partners, we are repairing, reconnecting and stabilizing Ukraine’s energy supply,” Sefcovic said.
As part of the Winter Plan, EUR 160 million has already been allocated to Ukraine, complementing the previously announced EUR 2 billion for the country’s energy security.
He added that the EU’s goal remains the same – “to put Ukraine in a position to negotiate peace on favorable terms and help the country on its way to full membership in the European Union.”
Help Ukraine bypass Hungary
Hungary has blocked the financing of military aid to Ukraine in the amount of 6.5 billion euros under the European Peace Fund for several months. This is due to Budapest’s fear that the funds contributed to the fund will be used to support Ukraine.
Recently, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said that Budapest will continue to block the decision to allocate 6.5 billion euros, until Ukraine resumes the transit of Russian oil from Lukoil.
