Due to the storm, hydroelectric power generation has recorded a strong growth of 30 percent in the last fifteen days, but has failed to provide a strong decline in energy prices.
This increase in renewable energy production reduced the amount of fossil generation in the energy mix, but did not help to reduce prices despite the positive trend achieved in October.
The monthly pool average continues to decline in October compared to September (-6%), showing a price similar to last year and well below the prices of 2021 (79.9 euro/MWh) and 2022 (163.1 euro/MWh). According to data from Advanced Energy Consulting, the average spot price so far this year is 68.5 euros, compared to 90.1 euros/MWh the previous year.
During these two weeks, negative figures almost completely disappeared, with almost no hours recorded at 0 Euro/MWh.
Energy companies were among the quickest groups to respond to the DANA emergency. In addition to Iberdrola and EDP’s efforts to restore electricity supplies to the 155,000 affected customers, Enagas and Naturgy are also teaming up to inspect the main gas pipelines in the region to ensure a safe supply.
Added to these operations are operations carried out by Red Eléctrica. The company mobilized its Operations and Transportation teams in coordination with emergency services to ensure energy reaches the region.
The biggest impact on the transport network occurred in the Catadau area, with 21 supports, also known as ‘towers’, falling and 7 severely damaged. The Quart de Poblet substation was also severely affected by the flood. However, thanks to the interconnection of the transport network, flows could be redirected to improve supply as much as possible.
The Group has fulfilled its duties to guarantee the safety of roads, accesses and other infrastructures. These efforts made it possible to begin repairing the affected network elements once access was allowed.
With the first machines that could reach the land, the transportation network began to be strengthened. Temporary electrical circuits were installed in affected areas to strengthen networks. They achieve this by combining existing high voltage lines using new conductors and through highly specialized work in protection, control and telecommunications.
Thanks to this, the company was able to launch a temporary line in record time, which will strengthen service to 7 substations in the region and free up other important infrastructure such as service lines and roads affected after the incident. Fall of various supports.
Work continues with the strengthening of power lines in the affected areas and thermographic examinations carried out by helicopter to eliminate the conditions in the serving facilities. Drones are also being used to enable new temporary circuits to be laid.
