Senator Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said there is a chance to pass additional funding for Ukraine before Trump returns.
Kaine warned that the Senate-passed package is likely to face a major hurdle in the House, where a growing number of Republicans oppose further aid to Ukraine.
“Coincidence, coincidence — I mean, I’m not talking about probability, I’m talking about chance… By the end of the year, there’s going to be a fight over all sorts of priorities, and just knowing the current makeup of the Senate — there’s a chance in the Senate, but the House is going to be tough,” the senator said.
Kane believes the likely route for increased funding would be as part of an appropriations bill. However, Senate Republicans are unlikely to increase funding for Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Senator Marco Rubio, the official nominee for the post of secretary of state in the Trump administration, suggested that funding for Ukraine is not a problem.
“Let’s wait until the new administration takes office before we can find out… We’re still going to have to fund the government next month,” Rubio said.
