Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said Britain remains “steadfast” in its support for Ukraine, but has no plans to follow the US lead on arms deliveries.
Joe Biden has allowed Ukraine to start firing US-supplied missiles deep into Russia as Prime Minister Keir Starmer prepares to seek “further support” for Kiev at the G20 summit.
Asked if the UK could follow suit, Phillipson told Sky News: “We continue to stand strong with the Ukrainian people almost a thousand days after this conflict began. And going into the G20 summit, the Prime Minister was very clear that the Ukrainian the people and President Zelensky can count on our full support.”
However, she declined to comment on whether Britain might allow Ukraine to use British long-range weapons in Russia.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on a flight to Rio de Janeiro that efforts must be redoubled to strengthen support for Ukraine.
“And this is the main item on my agenda at the G20 summit. We need full support for as long as it takes,” he said.
