According to Reuters, the conversation between Zelensky, Trump and French leader Emmanuel Macron lasted 35 minutes and contained no specific details regarding any vision of the world. Meanwhile, the 47th President of the United States (US) reiterated his words that he wants an immediate ceasefire, as well as dialogue to end the war.
Another source told the publication that Trump was “kind, respectful and open and seemed willing to listen.”
“Some central points were mentioned during the meeting – e.g. it was said that peace needs guarantees because a truce alone is not enough“Putin (Vladimir Putin, Russia’s dictator – ed.) may violate it again, as he did before, without proper guarantees,” said a source at the Office of the President of Ukraine.
Other unnamed officials close to Trump explained that the Republican so far steers the meetings to build personal relationships.
In general, Zelensky and Macron were “on the same page” during the meeting and did not try to push Trump into an impasse.
Another official said the presidents of Ukraine and France explained to the Republican that the dictator Putin in 2024 is no longer the same as he was in 2017, during Trump’s previous presidency.
“The same official added that the rapid fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the failure that affected his close ally Russia also was used as an argument for a tougher stance against Moscow in future peace efforts,” writes Reuters.
Meeting between Trump and Zelensky in Paris
On December 7, the consecration of Notre Dame Cathedral took place in Paris after a fire in 2019. Zelensky and Trump were invited to this event. Later in A trilateral meeting took place at the Elysee Palace leaders of Ukraine, France and the United States.
As the President of Ukraine said, the meeting was “good and productive” and peace through strength is possible.
