Europe takes another step in favor transition of the aviation sector to “net zero emissions”.
On 18 December 2024, the European Commission adopted a regulation introducing new CO2 emissions label (Flight Emissions Label – FEL) by July next year, which will be accompanied by the words “a clear and reliable method for calculating in-flight emissions“, the commission states in a press release.
Airlines flying from or within the EU will be able to join voluntarily. They have until February 1, 2025 to provide the required data to EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency).
“At present, lack of a unified methodology and criteria for assessing emissions from flights forces airlines and ticket sellers to report emissions levels using disparate methods that are not necessarily comparable.“, emphasizes the European Commission.
The introduction of new labeling is aimed at “correct this situation by defining a reliable and harmonized method for estimating in-flight emissions taking into account factors such as the type of aircraft, the average number of passengers and volume of cargo on board, and the aviation fuel used.“.
