It is known that additional clusters will be opened in the next year.
Von der Leyen stressed that Ukraine is showing significant progress towards membership of the European Union, and this progress should be appreciated.
“If they (Ukrainians – ed.) continue to stick to these efforts, we must be ready to start negotiations on the basic cluster at the beginning of 2025 and (open) other clusters in the same year,” she stressed.
The President of the European Commission also drew attention to the importance of Ukrainians knowing that their efforts lead to a European future.
“Ukrainians are now fighting for a future in the EU, and they should know that their efforts are rewarded and that the Ukrainian flag will fly in the heart of the EU,” she stressed.
Ukraine’s accession to the EU
After the official accession negotiations start on 25 June 2024, the country focused on harmonizing national legislation with European standards and introducing necessary reforms.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal said so Ukraine must be ready to join the EU by the end of 2025. He emphasized that the government is actively working to meet the necessary criteria for EU membership.
Speaking about the goals of his country during the presidency of the Council of the European Union, the head of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Radoslaw Sikorski, noted that the plan is to focus on ensuring an effective expansion rate of the organization.
