The startup company that presented itself from its beginnings as A competitor to Google Doubles down on artificial intelligence. It has acquired another startup called Carbon, which specializes in connecting external data sources to large language models. The Seattle-based startup launched into this market in 2022 and has raised $1.3 million to date. The amount of the operation was not reported.
Its search engine allows LLMs to search for relevant content across media file formats, websites, and more than fifteen data sources, including Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, GMail, and Notion. “We are specifically designed for multi-tenant use cases,” Carbon says. The idea is to make life easier for developers by facilitating access controls, file synchronization, and third-party authentication.
Confusion takes off
“Soon, we will integrate Carbon data connectors into our technology stack, allowing users to connect applications like Notion and Google Docs directly to Perplexity.” Determines who wants to challenge Google and its search engine. In fact, Carbon should make it easier to feed Perplexity’s response engine with different sources of information, with this data potentially residing in internal databases, stored in the cloud or on-premises. As part of this acquisition, all members of the Carbon team will join Perplexity.
The year 2024 was particularly marked by many innovations for startups. In particular, fired Enterprise Pro released in Aprilintroduced new features such as pages, spaces, and internal file search, and launched other search experiences, such as Advertising (only in the US at the moment)Shopping and following the US presidential elections, and streaming the results.
