German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius spoke categorically about peacekeeping forces in Ukraine. While the war continues, their contingent will not be in the country.
As the largest NATO country in Europe and the largest economy in Europe, Germany could not stand by and stand by, he said.
“But until the war (in Ukraine – ed.) ends, there will be no German soldiers on Ukrainian soil,” the minister said.
The issue of German peacekeeping forces in Ukraine
The deployment of peacekeeping forces to Ukraine has recently been discussed with even greater activity. At the same time, it is not the first time that Germany has spoken out on this issue.
Just a day earlier, on December 20, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said it was still too early to talk about the possibility of stationing a European peacekeeping contingent in Ukraine in the future.
At the same time, Scholz’s position coincides with that expressed by Pistorius. In the past, Scholz has said that sending German peacekeeping forces is impossible while there is a war going on in Ukraine.
At the same time, Pistorius does not rule out the possibility of German participation in peacekeeping forces for Ukraine in the long term, as one of the post-war scenarios for Ukraine.
