THE “WORLD” OPINION – A MUST SEE
The pleasure that can be taken from the vision Destino Motel it is triggered by an ambivalent feeling, that of recognition, but also that of a change of scenery. More precisely, the one felt through the interference of familiarity in an exogenous universe, an irruption that, therefore, launches the film on the tracks of a program both desired and feared by the viewer.
Karim Aïnouz’s film, shown in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in May, opens with heavenly images. Two young people are having fun on a sandy beach and diving into a too-perfect azure ocean. We feel that this state of grace will only last for a short time and the following sequences of the film will be the beginnings of a curious nightmare.
The two carefree people, Heraldo and Rafael, are brothers. Teaming up with what we assume is a formidable gang leader, they are responsible for taking down an outsider sentenced to death by the clan for his debts. Because he spent the night with a setter, Heraldo misses the appointment made for the planned action. His brother has been killed and the gang members are looking for him. The young man takes refuge in the hotel where he spent the night. He is hosted there by the manager, Dayana, in exchange for a helping hand maintaining the place.
