With the help of their agent, the Russians planned to derail trains carrying military cargo from Ukraine’s armed forces, which could cause serious damage to the country’s defense capabilities.
It is reported that the imprisoned man, a resident of Rivne, acted on the instructions of his handlers from the occupied Crimea – the organizer of the network Roman Yakimchuk and the “connector” Alexander Ignatiev.
The SBU noted that these two, who are in temporarily occupied territories, asked the leadership of the GRU of the Russian Federation 100,000 USD to perform the operation, although the practitioner was promised only 40% from the amount.
The defendant was preparing a home-made device capable of causing an accident on an ammunition train. To record the attack, he disguised several cameras in the shape of bird’s nests.
SBU operatives immediately neutralized the attacker, documented the criminal activity and communicated suspicion to all participants in the intelligence network.
It is noted that Yakimchuk and Ignatiev were charged in absentia under the following articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
- high treason (part 2 of Article 111),
- incitement to sabotage (Part 1 of Article 14, Part 4 of Article 27, Part 2 of Article 113),
- illegal handling of weapons (Part 1 of Article 263).
The arrested agent is now in custody and may receive life imprisonment with forfeiture of property.
The SBU continues extensive measures to identify other possible participants in the agent network.

Recently, the SBU and the State Bureau of Investigation detained an associate, who during the Russian occupation of Kherson guarded the dungeons of the Russians.
