There’s never been a better time to give (or treat yourself!) a virtual reality headset. But the different terms and very wide price ranges can be confusing. So, here’s our very simple guide to help you decide.
Virtual reality? mixed? XR? Spatial computing?
At the end of 2024, we are now talking more about mixed reality than virtual reality, because headsets can also do augmented reality using their cameras. But in fact, a mixed reality headset is primarily a virtual reality headset, it just has this additional function. In the same way, if Apple prefers to talk about “spatial computing” (because it uses the 3D space that surrounds us), its Vision Pro uses the same technologies as its other devices. Finally, virtual reality and augmented reality are often combined under the name “XR”, meaning “extended reality”. In short, this is ultimately just a matter of marketing in most cases.
Best VR headset for Christmas
The XR ecosystem is evolving more and more, but the reference is still the same Meta Quest 3released a year ago. It sold for €550 with the premium Batman: Arkham Shadow offer, It is undoubtedly the best product for the vast majority of consumers.
No computer needed, the headset works on its own, without the need for any other device (note that a smartphone is required for first startup and a Wi-Fi connection is required to download apps). The device is versatile and can be used for sports, video games, relaxation (movies, videos, relaxation experiences) or even to get a glimpse of the future of personal computing, with so-called productivity applications. And if you want to use it with a computer, for example to play on Steam, no problem, that is also possible.
It has a large catalog of VR games (including several major exclusives), but it also contains augmented reality experiences that take advantage of its wide field of view. Their controllers have established themselves as the standard for the genre, so much so that all other manufacturers are now copying them. The headphone’s power and visual quality are also among the best. If the Apple Vision Pro performs a little better, it also costs almost ten times more, has fewer applications available (especially games) and above all has no controllers, which severely limits its uses.
Low budget option
Not everyone has 550 euros to invest in a device of this type. Meta is aware of this, and has just released a file Meta Quest 3S To meet this need. The idea is very simple: the same capabilities as the Quest 3, but for 330 euros. Same computing power, same controllers, same augmented reality features, and same available games and apps (including Batman: Arkham Shadow offered as a bundle). The only difference is the display quality, which is worse (the Quest 3S uses the same screen and lenses as the Quest 2). To choose between the two, the Quest 3 is worth that extra €220 in our opinion. But if your budget doesn’t allow it, the Quest 3S is the perfect choice. The quality/price ratio is simply unbeatable.
For gaming computers
For those who only use headphones with their PC (for emulation, for example), our primary recommendation remains the Quest 3 or Quest 3S. They work seamlessly with Steam and there is no other product better at these prices. However, for those who want a lighter, more comfortable headphone, it’s our choice Big screen further. Sold at €1,370 without the SteamVR sensors necessary to use it and without controllers, it is an expensive product aimed at more demanding users.
It’s customized for each user (to correct vision and facial shape), can only be used with Steam and can’t be loaned to anyone else, but its ultra-compact shape means it can be worn all day without any comfort issues. If you wish, go to the manufacturer’s website, as the helmet is not distributed in stores.
Alternatives
Don’t want a dead product? If you own a PlayStation 5, you have the option PlayStation VR 2sold for 400 euros. The selection of games is generally lower than the Quest 3/3S and its functionality is less, not to mention the fact that it is connected to the console by cable, which can be inconvenient for movement. However, it is an option for fans of the Sony brand.
For those who want a standalone headset other than the Meta, HTC remains an option. the Vision focus for life It is offered at a price of 1,200 euros. Its computing power is less, as is its selection of apps and games, but it’s a solid product from an established brand.
